Overview

PES began in 1972 as an engineering college and became PES University in 2013, which changed the proposition considerably: it now grants its own degrees rather than VTU's, sets its own academic calendar, and admits a substantial share of its intake through its own entrance test, PESSAT.

Its computing programmes are the draw. PES has built an unusually strong culture around software — active student clubs, a steady stream of graduates into product companies and startups, and a set of faculty who have worked in industry. Among Bengaluru colleges, it is the one whose computer science students most consistently arrive already building things.

The university structure is a double-edged proposition worth understanding properly. You get curricular flexibility and a distinct institutional identity; you also pay university-level fees, which are materially higher than the VTU-affiliated colleges on this list, and you should go in with that fully costed out.

Admission routes

PESU fills its seats through the routes below. Which of these you are eligible for depends on your schooling history and domicile, not only on your rank — and getting that wrong is the single most common reason students miss a seat they could have had.

The government quota is allotted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority on KCET rank, and carries the lowest fee by a considerable margin. COMEDK seats are allotted by the consortium on COMEDK UGET rank and are open to candidates from any state. Management seats are filled by the institution directly, at a substantially higher fee.

PES also offers programmes outside engineering — design, management, law and life sciences — on its campuses, which gives the place more of a university feel than a standalone engineering college.

The bands below are approximate closing ranks under Karnataka general merit from recent admission cycles. They are offered to show relative difficulty between branches, and nothing more.

Fees

Fees depend entirely on which quota your seat comes from, and the difference between them is large — often several times over across four years. We describe them in bands here rather than quoting figures, because published amounts change annually and a stale number on a website is worse than no number at all.

When you budget, cost the whole degree, not year one: tuition across four years, hostel and mess if applicable, one-time admission and caution deposits, examination fees, and the fee revisions that tend to arrive from the second year. Placements

• Among the strongest software recruiting profiles in Bengaluru, with a well-established pipeline into product companies and a notably active startup ecosystem around the alumni base.
• The gap between computing and non-computing branches is wider here than at most peers — worth weighing carefully if you are considering a core branch.
• A meaningful number of graduates go on to postgraduate study abroad, and the university is set up to support that.

Campus & student life

The main Ring Road campus in Banashankari is compact and distinctly urban — closer in feel to a city university than a residential campus. It is well connected across south Bengaluru and reasonable to commute to from much of the city's southern half.

Student club culture is the defining feature. The technical clubs, hackathon teams and project groups are unusually active and largely student-run, and they are where much of the practical learning actually happens. A student who ignores them gets substantially less out of PES than one who does not.

Hostel facilities exist but are limited relative to intake, and many students take PG accommodation nearby. Banashankari has abundant options at a range of prices.

Who this college suits

A good fit if

• Students clear that they want to work in software, and who intend to build alongside their coursework.
• Anyone able to sit PESSAT in addition to the state and consortium exams.
• Families comfortable with university-level fees across four years.
• Students who want a university environment with programmes beyond engineering around them.

Look elsewhere if

• Families for whom fees are the binding constraint — the VTU-affiliated colleges on this list are considerably cheaper through the government quota.
• Students focused on core mechanical or civil engineering, who will find deeper departments elsewhere.
• Anyone who has not registered for PESSAT and is relying on KCET alone to get in.
